I've used both AVG and Avast, i prefer to have AVG on my system, but not resident (I don't like it hindering performance), I just scan files when I download them using right click. I'm sure I'm still more vulnerable, but I've found they [anti-virus] usually hurt more than they help.

from here on (and I should have been doing this in the beginning..shame of me...to download to a usb drive and then scan it there first before loading it on my system.
